John Joseph Kelly grew up on Chicago's rough South Side quick-fisted -- he had to. He was just five-foot-five inches tall, weighed only 112 pounds, and was the youngest of four sons of Irish immigrants. Johnny made his way through the rough-and-tumble neighborhoods of his youth with irrepressible humor, the occasional donnybrook, and never-say-die toughness.
Tough as he was, Johnny had a romantic streak. At the age of sixteen he left home and literally ran off with a traveling circus. He returned home only after America entered the war two years later. He discovered his eldest brother was a captain in the National Guard, another was flying in the Air Corps, and the third was in army intelligence. Kelly felt obligated to do one better. Johnny joined US Marines.

Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune, often referred to as "the greatest of all Leathernecks," during his more than 40 years service with the Marine Corps, led the famed Second Division (Army) in World War I, and was Major General Commandant of the Marine Corps from June 1920 to March 1929.
J.J.C. Joffre, General and Marshal of France
Joseph Joffre was commander of the French Army during the early stages of World War I. He is most well known for rallying the retreating French forces and leading them to victory against the Germans at the crucial First Battle of the Marne
Private Henry L. Jackson, US Army
A U.S. Army soldier who performed heroically in the first African American unit of the U.S. Army to engage in combat in World War I. On watch in the Argonne Forest on May 14, 1918, he fought off a German raid in hand-to-hand combat, killing multiple German soldiers and rescuing a fellow soldier while suffering 21 wounds, in an action that was brought to the nation's attention by coverage in the New York World and The Saturday Evening Post later that year. On June 2, 2015, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House.
